Improving Access to Lighting through Solar PV systems in Health and Education Centres for Sustainable Development in Tanzania: 2013-2014

The project was financed by Rural Energy Agency (REA) aiming at increasing access to clean lighting systems for rural health centres and schools located in the national electricity off grid areas in order to help the medical doctors, teachers and nurses to deliver quality services during the night.  The techncial capacity building for  rural technicians to install, operate and maintain the systems carried out. The project implemented in Muheza and Handeni Districts. About 15 solar PV systems (10 in healthy centers and 5 in secondary schools) have been installed.

Green Charcoal for Reduction of Deforestation and Green house gases emission 2013-2014

This project was financed by UNDP under GEF. The project has been implemented in Morogoro, Coast and Dar es Salaam Regions in the areas with plenty of biomass wastes. The "green charcoal" are produced by carbonizing biomass waste (Rice husks & Saw dust) and then mixed with a binder compressed into briquettes using a ball press or extruder machines. The produced briquette/green charcoal does not only reduce deforestation but also avoid the methane and carbon dioxide emission from respective decomposition and/or burning of heaps of the agricultural residue at agro processing centres.  The project has achieved to the objectives by establishing four sustainable green charcoal production centres in rural areas, entrepreneurial support to 25 men and women directly to generate income out of the project, to reduce deforestation and greenhouse gasses emission through the use of agricultural and sawmill residues and support innovative charcoal production for cooking and soil improvement and improve livelihood of the producers through conversion of residues into wealth.

Sustainable Energy Project for Improving Education, Health and Business Services in Tanzania: 2012- 2014

The project is under Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) financed by Finish Embassy and Development Bank of South Africa. The project is designed to implement activities on the use of renewable energy technologies including solar PV for electricity provision in social institutions and business enterprise, Installation of solar water heaters in institutions and Business Enterprise as well as improved cook stoves for schools and colleges.

Modern Energy Technologies Demonstration Pilot Project for Increasing Access to Modern Energy Services in Institutions in Tanzania: 2011-2012

The project was under Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) financed by Finish Embassy and Development Bank of South Africa. The project was designed to pilot and demonstrate the use of three renewable energy technologies such as solar PV for electricity provision, improved cook stoves and biogas plants for cooking and lighting in social centers. The objectives were to address the challenges caused by lack of the modern energy technologies in social services sectors. The project was implemented in Kilimanjaro and Tanga Regions. A total of 14 Solar PV systems were installed in social centers (9 in healthy centers and 5 in Secondary Schools), 10 improved cook stoves installed (5 in secondary and 5 in primary schools), 1 biogas plant installed in healthy centre. Through capacity building trainings at local levels, about 42 solar PV technicians, 30 artisans for improved cooks stoves and 3 biogas builders were trained
